| According to a Cecil Whig article, dated August 14, 1952, the Y's initial programs drew more people than the entire population of the Town of Elkton (5,376). In addition to Little League, adult softball, badminton, rifle lessons and chess, they offered swim instruction from nearby residential pools. |
| So, after many years of planning and with the help of much fundraising and 36 donated acres, the group moved into a 33,000 square foot "state-of-the-art" facility, located at Routes 40 and 279. Four years later, a 41,000 square foot wing was added, making the indoor facility 74,000 square feet.
This building now houses a 3,500 sq. foot fitness room, 25-yard swimming pool, five day-care rooms, three full-sized gymnasiums, two racquetball courts, an aerobics room, a karate room, a gymnastics room, two conference rooms and two mulit-purpose rooms plus eight acres utilized for football and other outdoor sports.
Plans are currently in the works for additional expansion and programs are steadily being added to their already busy schedule. The "mission" of the Y has remained the same throughout the years, however. Their motto "We build strong kids, strong families, strong communities" pretty much
says it all!
